EdGE Micro-Workshops
Three presentations by Marie Paretti, Ph.D. (Bio), Virginia Polytechnic State University
Marie Paretti, director of the Virginia Tech MSE/ESM Engineering Communications and Professional Development Program, will be visiting campus on Wednesday, May 14 and Thursday, May 15 to present three brief workshops:
The Social Functions of Communication (Flier)
Helping students move from "good " to "useful"
Often our discussions of student writing and speaking are tied to concepts of "good" that may or may not be measurable, concrete, and functional. This micro-workshop will describe ways to understand what "good" means by looking at how communication functions in our lives. We will then use that understanding to consider how we should be talking to our students about what it means to communicate effectively, what kinds of assignments we should use, and what kinds of assessments are both manageable and effective to help students make the transition from the classroom to the workplace.
Please join us for this workshop. Expect to participate in active learning exercises in small groups.
Dates: Thursday, May 15
Time: 9:10 am to 10:00 am
Location: Kennedy Library, Room 510B
Teaching Cross-Cultural Collaboration (Flier)
Understanding and Responding to Cultural Constructions of "Team"
This micro-workshop will help educators prepare students for the global nature of collaboration in a flat world. We will highlight the kinds of cultural differences that can impact team collaboration, examine scenarios that can help students develop cross-cultural competence, and discuss ways to implement and assess both small and large assignments in the classroom.
Please join us for this workshop. Expect to participate in active learning exercises in small groups.
Dates: Thursday, May 15
Time: 10:10 am to 11:00 am
Location: Kennedy Library, Room 510B
Teaching Interdisciplinary Collaboration (Flier)
Moving Beyond "Divide and Conquer"
What does it mean to "function on a multi-discplinary team"? This micro-workshop will help educators define interdisciplinary collaboration, create and manage interdisciplinary student design teams, and teach students transferable skills that will help them succeed in interdisciplinary environments. We will examine the
challenges to interdisciplinary collaboration for teachers and students, and discuss specific assignments and strategies to promote learning and team performance.
