Newer Faculty Learning Communities
Planning / Implementing a Successful Faculty Career
An interdisciplinary approach that has become quite popular in higher education circles, faculty learning communities consist of a group of people motivated by common educational values or interests who come together to actively engage in sharing and learning together in order to acquire knowledge and new skills. Both cooperative and collaborative in nature, the primary purpose of the faculty learning communities at Cal Poly is to explore various techniques that will enhance teaching and learning “in” and “outside” of the university classroom.
The common vision of a community at the beginning is based upon a foundation of clearly-defined values and principles (defined by the community members) and this common vision is constantly revised and enriched over time based upon the developing interests of the participating members. In such a community, knowledge is socially constructed either with real-time meetings or virtual communication. Generally, the ultimate goal of such communities is to provide faculty learning experiences that build community and foster more explicit connections between the participating faculty and their varied disciplines.
